What is it?

It is a service where we offer an objective and informed review of your idea. When you use this service you will be told how much more development and design work is needed before you can commence manufacture of your product. Also, when you use this service, we will give you an indicative cost of manufacture for your product.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

What will it do for me?

It’s not easy developing a product. It can be fun though, and many people do enjoy the process. But it still takes a lot of time. And some of us are a lot more interested in the business side of things. So it is understandable if you are in a situation where you have a fantastic idea, but the time it takes to properly document the idea is just too long for you. This can especially be the case if you are short of personal time or your time is just valuable to you for other activities.

 

You need your own expert to do this for you. This is where our product review service is ideal.

 

When you use the product review service you will know how much more work you will need to invest before you can start looking for manufacturers. This will let you how much development will cost. We don’t plan on developing your product. We only let you know what can or should be done to produce your product and how much it will likely cost you. There are many people who can give you advice on how to make your product. They can also give you an estimated cost on the production costs. But that is usually based upon their experience in their area. We are local to China, and we can give you accurate advice on Chinese capabilities, suitability and costs. The fact is that some industries have developed more than others in China, and the levels of competence and efficiencies are not directly transferable from other parts of the world. You need someone local if you really want to know what the costs are going to be.

The process of having another person (especially and experienced engineer) review your design can spot potential issues and opportunities for improvement. If we think we can see a way to make your product better then we will tell you. Having these identified early on in the process gives you the best product possible.

 

Your business plan will get a quick once over too

Once again, because we are engineers we want to see your product made. We also realise that for a product to be successful it must be designed to fit with your commercial plan. Therefore, we will need to know some key facts about your business plan. If we don’t have them we will ask. This will make you think more deeply about your business plan, and identify and issues earlier on when they can be easily fixed.

 

 

 

 

What will be in the product review?

 

The product review will be a report in PDF format. It will be as long as required to communicate the following information to you.

 

1. Introduction

The introduction will summarise the product and its intended function. It will also cover the proposed commercials such as the number of units to be sold, the intended market (country, region and demographic), methods of delivery etc.

 

The purpose of the introduction is to ensure that we have the same understanding of your product as you. That way we can be sure be sure that we give advice that is most appropriate to your specific product.

 

2.  Description of the basic design

The description will cover the operations and functions of each part of the product and the product itself. At the end of the description there will be a clear understanding of the proposed method of operation given the current state of the development of the design.

 

The description is another tool that is used to ensure that our understanding of the product is the same as yours. If we both agree on the way the product operates then we can be sure we both have the same understanding.

 

The description is also essential to ensure that we can select the best manufacturing operation for each part. Once you know what a part needs to be able to do, then you can select the best material, and the best manufacturing operation.

 

The description will also bring to attention any potential design flaws. If we spot any then we will communicate these to you with our thoughts and recommendations. It is completely up to you if you wish to act on them and you get them for free.

 

Depending upon your design the description might be quite small or it might be rather large.

 

3. Part description – (reason for the material and production method selected)

Each part will then be considered in turn. The description and introduction will then be used to determine the best material for each part and the most suitable manufacturing process. The rationale for each selection will be presented so that you can see why each selection was made. That way you know that the price that is quoted is based upon the required function of the part and commercials of the business plan.

 

4.  Costs and set up time

Once the material and process is selected it is fairly easy to estimate the costs and time requirements for each part.

 

This section lists all of the parts with their costs of set up and production, and time for production. This is also done for any assembly operations that are required. At the end of this section you will be presented with a total cost of set up and production along with time to complete the first order.

 

5.  Estimated transportation costs

Based on the size of the product it is possible to develop an estimate of transport. If you tell us where you would want the product sent, then we can give you an indication of the shipping costs.

 

6.  Recommendations on next steps

Given the state of development and the match between the design and the commercial plan a set of recommendations are given. This could be as simple as stating that the design should be developed further or that the current design is unlikely to suit the business plan, and at least one of them should be altered. While we do our best to give you the best recommendations we will understand that you may not wish to implement them and that you might want to discuss the viability of other options. This discussion is also most welcome.

 

 

 

 

How much does the cost and how long does it take?

 

Price

Obviously the cost of the review is dependent upon the nature of the product. You will need to contact us to confirm. But consider the cost of having your product developed or the time taken to develop it yourself. This can be from $5000 for a simple product, if you can find a good design company in China or another low wages country, or $100000’s for a more complex product, sometimes even more. It is a good idea to ensure that you are going to be able to sell your product at a profit before you spend this kind of money. The cost of the review is much less than this so it is a financially wise service to take advantage of.

 

Just imagine the feeling when you realise that you have spent $1000s developing a product that you can’t make a profit with. It is well worth avoiding this for a much smaller cost.

 

Time

This is also dependent upon the size of the product. However, it also depends upon how busy we are. It also depends upon you! We make sure that we give you what you need. Therefore, we will first write the introduction and the description of the design. This is sent to you to ensure that you agree with our perception. Once we all agree then we are ready to proceed with the rest of the report.

 

At this time we will ask for a 20% payment. Even though we are only asking for 20% payment we have probably done around 80% of the work. In these jobs it is the questions that take more time than the answers. Understanding the nature of the product is the hardest part, the rest is pretty easy.

 

Once this is paid we will complete the report and send it to you. We will then discuss the recommendations and make changes based on that discussion. We will then send the second version of the report, with both sets of recommendations to you.

 

You will have a report on your product that was written in consultation with you every step of the way.

 

With this report you will be in an excellent position to continue the process of starting your own product based business and having your product made in China. As we have said many times, we want to see you start your own product based business or help you improve your current business. Standard price

Even though the cost of the report is dependent upon the nature of your product, we still have a standard price and delivery time.

Most jobs can be done within a week (depending upon how quickly you can get back to us) and most will cost the standard price of $300. However, if your product is simple or we are familiar with such product the price could be much less. Or even nothing if it is very simple; sometimes that is just easier than going through the effort of transferring money from one country to another
